 The aim of this work is to study the effect of symmetry and negative index materials in the enhancement of the performance of the filters based on 1D photonic crystal. By using the transfer matrix method, we investigate the optical spectra of the two symmetrical structure the first one is periodic  [H(HL)m ]j/ [H(HL)m]j and  the second is hybrid  [H(HL)m ]j/ T4/[H(HL)m]j where H and L are two elementary layers with the refractive indices nL =1.45(SiO2) and nH=2.3(TiO2). We can obtain a very high quality filter by using the left handed materials and correctly choosing the high refractive index nH without missing the primordial role of the symmetry.
