This paper focused on the roles of library and information services for rural development in Ethiopia. Library and information services in Ethiopia remained stunted for numbers of years and to date it has still not reached its zenith. As a result rural area, such as school libraries and research libraries are lacking professional librarians. However, the current trend is showing that it is at a stage of compensatory growth or at exponential phase, because the past few years have seen good progress and still gaining momentum. In the near future, rural areas of Ethiopia will certainly get professional librarians, because numbers of universities, among others, Jimma University, Haramaya University, Gondar University, Asosa and Bule Hora Universites are now producing Library and Information Science professionals every year. The wise use of the services of the library and information science education in rural areas will provide the farming community with scientific knowhow and herald the formation of knowledge societies in Ethiopia. However, this can only be realized when information and knowledge are effectively shared for overall agricultural and rural development. It is thus recommended that the libraries and information centers that provide precise and up-to date information relevant to the respective area and most importantly on early warnings in case of human and/or environmental disaster to occur in that particular area.
