 Mosquito borne diseases are infecting over 700 million people annually world-wide and the use of synthetic chemical insecticides suffer set back due to resistance, environmental persistence, and non-target selectivity. Consequently, larvicidal activity of different solvents (ethanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane) extracts of Chromolaena odorata leaves were investigated against Aedes vittatus. Furthermore, the most potent solvent (n-hexane) extract was fractionated using column chromatography and most effective fraction isolated, was identified using GCMS and FTIR techniques. The results showed that n-hexane extract is the most potent solvent extract, with an LC50 value of 1.835ppm. While ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts had an LC50 values of 3.314ppm and 5.163ppm, respectively. The chromatographic fractions of the n-hexane extract (CFnHE) of C. odorata tested on the larvae, showed increased potency in some fractions, CF3, CF6 and CF5 with LCĀ­50 values of 1.668ppm, 1.308ppm and 1.811ppm respectively. The GCMS identification of the most effective fraction, CF 6, showed thirteen peaks, predominant two of which correspond to oleic acid (48.58%), Octadecanoic acid (24.38%). The FTIR analysis identified functional groups present which include; alkane, alkene, alkyl halide, aldehyde, carboxylic acid and carbonyl ester. Based on these findings, the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Chromolaena odorata have shown good larvicidal activity with n-hexane extract as most potent, thus, should be exploited as source of larvicide for the control of mosquito borne diseases. The oleic acid content of this plant should be explored and optimised to serve as source of larvicide that is effective and environmentally friendly.
