In the present uncertain economic environment, diversification of income sources or livelihood has emerged as the avenue to cope with the stresses and strains of earning a sustained and secured livelihood. People’s ability to engage themselves in diverse activities is often governed by their relative access to resource base. In this backdrop, a study is conducted in some selected villages of Birbhum district of West Bengal pertaining to the issues of livelihood and diversification strategy followed by the people there. Divergences or uniformities in the socio-economic status, outlook, opportunities and push and pull factors explain significant/ insignificant differences in various parameters of diversification cross the study areas.
