The Role Of CIO In IT Intensive Multinational Company

Growing role of IT in business value creation process is making the position of CIO increasingly important. Existing research deals mostly with general trends of CIO’s role in organizations. Since the multinational companies are special in nature, there is particular need to exclusively study the role of CIOs of such organizations. Given the scarcity of such research, this paper aims to identify the role and responsibility of CIO in a multinational IT-intensive company and the challenges he experiences in performing his role. By conducting a case study on a Nordic IT-intensive multinational company, the study finds that the CIO is a C-level executive and a strategic partner who plays strategic role in the company. Vendor management, Innovation and growth, IT operations, Crisis management and Project milestones are the five most core responsibility of CIO. Innovation is part of her every day job. The role played by the CIO is found to be threefold: business leader, executive-level manager and technical manager. She plays combined role of enabler and driver of the strategy of the whole organization. A high degree of technological obsolescence is identified as the only strong challenge CIO faces in successfully managing IT resources. The paper concludes by providing some suggestions for the future CIO to best elevate their role.
