Multimedia streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) faces high packet loss rate which greatly degrades the quality of the video. This paper aims to design a congestion solution and priority based Forward Error Correction (FEC) for multimedia wireless networks. The proposed scheme calculates FEC redundancy rate which is adaptively adjusted based on network load and packet loss rate effectively while providing user perceived Quality-of-Service (QoS) to the real-time applications like network gaming, TV broadcasting. The queue at the access point adapts preemptive Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithm to give space to the video packets even at the time of heavy load and buffer overflow. An analytical model is developed to predict the performance of the proposed mechanism by calculating effective packet loss rate of the high priority flow transmitted over wireless networks. The priority-based FEC (PFEC) mechanism is tested under NS2 simulations to show the benefits of high recovery performance of real-time packets and maintaining fairness between flows by generating redundant packets for low priority packets.
