Diet therapy is considered a crucial factor for diabetes management. Diabetic patients develop complications due to poor awareness regarding the disease and inadequate glycemic control. Patient education is the most effective way to lessen the complications of diabetes and its management. The dietary knowledge and awareness about diabetes was assessed in 50 diabetic men before and after counselling. They were exposed to a 1-hour diet counselling program individually with their family members. Fasting and postprandial glucose and serum lipid profiles were tested before counselling and after a period of forty five days. The control of diabetes improved significantly after diet counselling. The gain in knowledge and awareness about diabetes was significant at 1% level. Compliance to the high fibre, high carbohydrate, and low fat diet was checked by analysing the nutrient intake of the subjects. The reduction in calorie intake was significant at 5% level. Thus, our findings reveal that diet counselling is an essential component in diabetes management program
