  Nowadays, due to the advancement of communication technologies mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) play a prominent role in ad hoc communication because there is no need of predefined infrastructure during communication between the nodes. In general, Overall communications in mobile ad hoc networks are based on routing protocols that make possible to send data packets between the mobile nodes. Some complex properties of MANETs such as dynamic topologies, Wireless links etc., make routing protocols task critical to manage the communication. So that MANETs unicast routing protocols can be classified into three classes: flat, hierarchical and geographic position assisted routing protocols. This paper is going to evaluate the performance of each class routing protocols in terms of energy consumption during communication based on some metrics such as carried load, energy consumed in transmit mode, energy consumed in received mode using Qualnet simulator 6.1.
